Audio Book Review Technical Scores
Vocal Quality & Tone | • Clarity and pleasantness • Consistent tone throughout • Voice suits genre/characters | 5 | Beautifully produced by a superbe team |
Characterisation & Performance | • Distinct voices • Genuine emotion • Avoids exaggeration or stereotype | 3 | Lovely, but this is not a novel. While this is a great narration, this is a documentary, not a fiction. So there are no characters, well except as illustrations |
Pacing, Rhythm & Flow | • Natural pacing • Smooth phrasing • Effective pauses | 3 | There are differences in pacing, but it's not a novel |
Technical Production Quality | • Clean audio • Stable volume • Professional editing | 5 | Excellent |
Engagement & Listener Experience | • Holds attention • Enhances story • Re-listen appeal | 2 | I listen to podcast and radio like this all day, I am looking for fiction at night. |
Audio Book Review
Stephen Fry’s Edwardian Secrets is a beautifully produced deep-dive into a strangely frantic slice of history, and Fry’s voice is—as always—pure velvet. The production quality is flawless, and the documentary style feels rich, clever, and quietly thrilling. Just don’t come expecting fictional characters or dramatic arcs; this is more BBC Radio 4 than bedtime storytelling. The pacing shifts a little between segments, but it’s thoughtful and engaging throughout. If you love documentaries, you’ll be in heaven. If you’re hoping for a novel… well, let’s just say the Edwardians aren’t about to tuck you in. (Honestly, Fry could read a tax code and we’d still listen.) Audio Book Review Nov 2025
